What a spray tan is

A spray tan is UV free color. It uses DHA, an ingredient that reacts with the very top layer of your skin to create a bronzed look. The FDA explains DHA works on the dead surface cells, which is why exfoliating matters so much and why your color fades as your skin naturally renews.

It does not protect you from the sun, so keep your sunscreen in the rotation.

Prep like a pro

  • Exfoliate before your visit, giving extra love to elbows, knees, ankles and wrists. Dermatologists say dry, thick spots grab more color.
  • Shave or wax ahead of time, not right before.
  • Show up with clean skin: no lotion, deodorant, perfume or makeup.
  • Wear loose, dark clothes and slides for the ride home.

Pro tip: Thick spots like knees love to soak up extra color. Exfoliate them like you mean it.

Aftercare and making it last

  • Wear loose clothes and skip sweaty workouts for a few hours while your color develops.
  • Rinse when your consultant says, using lukewarm water and no scrubbing.
  • Moisturize every day. Hydrated skin holds color longer.
  • Pat dry instead of rubbing, and go easy on long hot baths.

DermNet notes DHA color usually shows within hours, peaks around 8 to 24 hours, and typically lasts about 3 to 10 days.

Friendly reminder: this is general info, not medical advice. If you have a skin or health condition, are pregnant, or take meds that can make you sensitive to light (some antibiotics, acne meds and more), check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

FAQ

Can I wear deodorant to my spray tan?

Skip it until after. Deodorant and lotion can act like a barrier and leave patchy spots.

How long does a spray tan last?

DermNet notes DHA color usually lasts about 3 to 10 days, depending on your skin and aftercare.

Does a spray tan protect me from the sun?

No. Most sunless tanners have no sunscreen, so keep using broad spectrum SPF outdoors.

Which bronzer should I pick?

Island, Mocha or Kona. Tell your consultant your vibe and they will help you match.
