UV in one paragraph

Ultraviolet light is invisible energy from the sun with shorter wavelengths than the light you can see. Tanning beds give off UV too. The Skin Cancer Foundation lists two types that matter for your skin: UVA and UVB.

UVA vs UVB

  • UVA: longer wavelength, reaches deeper into the skin, and is mainly linked to tanning and skin aging. It is the main type used in most tanning beds and can pass through windows and clouds.
  • UVB: shorter wavelength, works on the outer layers, and is mainly linked to sunburn, plus a slower, delayed tan. Glass filters it.

Both types can damage skin over time, and the damage adds up. That is why we are big on short sessions, no burning, and plenty of rest days.

How tanning beds use UV

The FDA notes most tanning lamps give off both UVA and UVB, and some give off only UVA. Every bed has an exposure chart from the manufacturer, a timer and an emergency stop, and your consultant follows that chart for your skin type.

Low pressure vs high pressure, in plain words

Low pressure beds use the long tube style lamps most people picture. They are the classic starter beds.

High pressure beds use compact, powerful lamps behind special filter glass. For example, the Ergoline Open Sun 1050 at our Chillicothe salon lists 30 high pressure lamps and a 12 minute max session. Stronger lamps mean shorter sessions, not longer ones.

Skin types and moderation

Your skin type (Type 1 to Type 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale) shapes how your skin reacts to UV. The Skin Cancer Foundation stresses that every skin type can be harmed by UV, even skin that rarely burns. Moderation is the move: short sessions, rest days, and never chasing a burn.

Pro tip: Planning a beach day? Do not tan indoors the same day. Ohio’s state consent form says the same thing.

Eyewear every time

UV can injure your eyes, and the FDA requires tanning beds to come with protective goggles. Wear them snug, every session.

Friendly reminder: this is general info, not medical advice. If you have a skin or health condition, are pregnant, or take meds that can make you sensitive to light (some antibiotics, acne meds and more), check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
